While there are many many different styles of carports designs and styles that you can select from, you need to be careful in your selection process to choose the one that fits all of your needs and is yet soothing and pleasing to the eye when seen in conjunction with the background of your house. Carports can sometimes be heavy on the wallet and even the cheap carports can sometimes cause several hundreds of dollars and so it is important that you spend enough time up front in choosing the right style.

The first and foremost criterion that will affect your decision is the budget that you have allocated for the project. Obviously, if money is no object then the choices you have are unlimited. Ensure that the style of carport you choose complements the style of the house that you have. You do not want a modern contemporary looking carport to go with an old Victorian style residence and vice-versa. Wooden carports provide a very elegant look especially timber or pine wood. The necessary finishing touches given to the carport can add to the beauty of the structure. I had a friend who had purchased a quite expensive home and about a year later added a carport that was absolutely horrible and brought down the aesthetics pretty badly and the result was that everytime someone talked about their house, instead of admiring the beauty of the house, they would inevitably talk about the lousy carport that they added on. You do not want to get into a similar situation.

The next criterion is the size of the carport. If you are planning to use it store your automobiles, then a rough rule of thumb is that it takes four feet by seven and a half feet for one car or eight feet by seven and a half feet for two. Now, if you plan to store additional items in the carport, then the size needs to be larger. The same is applicable if recreational vehicles and other items are planned to be stored. Pre-planning what is going to be stored is very critical in the selection of the style and design of the carport.

Of course, there is no limit to the level of finishing touches you can add to your carport such as brick piers and such but then these things start costing more and more money and you may need to keep a close watch on the budget that you have allocated. If you have a lot of money at your disposal, you can always hire an architect to provide you with a killer design Keep in mind when you select your carport, to check with the local zoning laws and any permits and such that you may need to obtain from the building department of your town or city, prior to starting the project. Local laws vary greatly depending upon the community you live in and therefore you want to avoid any surprises after you have purchased, paid for and installed the carport.
