The existence of carports in the United States can be dated back to the early 1900s. Geographically, it was the mid western region of the country where these early carports debuted. With the primary intention of providing some kind of protection for automobiles which were the new horses of the time, these early carports were also called auto spaces. The credit for the coining the term carports is generally given to the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright and it seems that the first installation was at the house of Herbert Jacobs that was built in the historic city of Madison in Wisconsin.

Generally, the most basic of carports have structural columns that support a roof but are not fully enclosed on the sides. This allows for some protection from the elements while providing adequate ventilation. Whereas garages generally provide complete protection from the elements but do not provide sufficient ventilation unless assisted by ventilation mechanisms such as blowers and ventilators.

While carports vary quite extensively in price ranges, from the most basic ones costing just a few hundred dollars to the more elaborate ones costing several thousands of dollars, the definition of what are cheap carports is quite hazy and vague indeed. What is a cheap carport for one may not be so for another, when strictly looking from the dollars and cents economics point of view. However, it is the value of the carport, defined as the intrinsic return on the amount of money
invested that is more of a measure of what is a cheap carport. Intrinsic in this point of view is the use to which the carport is going to be subjected to and its alternative that it is being compared against. For example, if a few thousand dollars is spent to install a carport that can very well protect a boat costing several thousands of dollars as opposed to protecting that boat in a rented
storage space that would cost a lot more, then that carport solution is actually a cheap solution. Hence in defining cheap carports, one needs to consider what other alternatives are being considered, the quality of the carport itself and of course the cost of the project.

A case in point to be remembered is that while you may be able to purchase a cheap carport from a source, you also need to consider the cost of erection and installation which can sometimes be quite high if not properly implemented. In all cases, cheap carports are a very effective solution to a wide variety of common every day protection problems and should be considered by all as an option.
