So you finally decided to get a Do-it-Yourself affordable carport, also known as a DIY cheap carport for your home or business. Now there are tens of suppliers of these DIY affordable carports in the market today and sometimes, you as the customer might end up with a lot of questions that you do not know where to get the answers from. Well, in this post, we will address a couple of those issues.

If a DIY carport outfit offers a carports installation service through recommended contractors, do you need to be concerned if you are in a location that is far beyond what they service as far as installation. The answer is no, because DIY affordable carports are supposed to be designed to be installable by yourself without the need for outside contractors and so proximity to the company selling these DIY affordable carports is not supposed to be necessary. If you still do not want to install it yourself, then any reputable contractor in your locality should be able to install these for you.

Do you need to buy the frame kit and the panels from the same carport manufacturer? The answer is that while I recommend buying the entire system from one manufacturer is easier, convenient and better from the point of view of design optimization ( that is a term us engineers use to indicate the optimization of design to meet form, fit and function between varied components of an assembled system ), you do not necessarily have to buy them all from one source. You could buy the frame kit from one source and the panels from a different source, may be even locally.

All carports are designed are built the same. You do not know how many times I have heard this statement and it cannot be farther from the truth. Many carports may look similar and claim to be just the same as the competition, but there are many many variables that need to be evaluated. For example, what is the yield strength of the steel members used, what kind of surface corrosion protection are they offering, what kind of warranty do they offer on their painted surfaces, what kind of gauge are they using on their frame members – these are all material selection and design criteria that need to be compared with each other before the two carports that you are considering are deemed to be the same from a design standpoint.

A carport is simply a protection device and is not a load bearing member. Again false, false, false. A carport is subject to the elements all the time and therefore needs to have a very good snow load bearing capacity and very good wind load bearing capacity. Without these, the first sign of a snow storm or wind storm comes and there goes your investment. Ask questions of your carport salesman and make sure he takes the time to give you the details and comparison shop on the front of quality and design also in addition to simply price. Price alone should not determine your final decision.
